Our story…

The Community Garden Club of Cohasset (CGCC) was founded in 1959.  Spearheaded by Polly Logan, an avid gardener, a group of friends answered the need for a garden club open to the Cohasset community and surrounding towns. The club first met in Polly’s dining room at the Logan Estate on Jerusalem Road. It was in Polly’s barn that we began to make our signature pine cone wreaths that we sell at our House Tour Marketplace.  In 1960 we joined the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.

The club grew to about 100 members very quickly. With a plethora of talented gardeners, flower designers, horticulturists, master gardeners, and crafters, CGCC members brought their talents to the Cohasset community.

Today, we have a Junior Gardeners Club at the Deer Hill School, flower design workshops at the Wilcutt Senior Center.  We grant financial gifts to high school seniors and maintain several gardens around town.  Our biggest ongoing effort has been the creation and maintenance of The Lightkeepers Cottage Garden on Government Island since 1993.  Other gardens we care for include the Cohasset Historical Society and the POW Garden on the island on North Main Street.

For fund raising, we have a biennial Yuletide House Tour.  Members work diligently in craft workshops throughout the year to produce unique items to offer at our tour Marketplace.  Community neighbors graciously open their homes for us to decorate and visit.  Every May, we have our popular Plant Sale where we sell plants that we dig and pot from our own gardens.  Both these events have a large number of members participating and enjoying in the camaraderie.

The club continues to provide all its members the chance to work and learn among friends.

Board meetings are held every fourth Tuesday at the Lightkeepers parking lot at 9:30 a.m. weather permitting. Check out the website Calendar, watch for emails from Diane Benson, and read the monthly newsletter, now from Whit Leffel, for updates or new developments as they arise.

The Garden Club of Nagoya

The CGCC is unique in having a “Sister Club” 6,800 miles away in Nagoya, Japan.  The Nagoya Garden Club (NGC) was founded in October 2001, with its inaugural meeting in early 2002.  The club emerged as a result of a friendship between Iku Isihara, then our recording secretary, and Takako Kohri, NGC’s current recording secretary.
